Course Description
This course examines the history of the Old South, mainly the period from 1800 to 1861. The lectures and reading cover a variety of topics but will primarily explore southern society and culture, the growth of southern distinctiveness, and the ultimate attempt in 1861 to create a separate (short-lived) southern nation.

This course next offered in Spring 2005.
