After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980. In recent years, bold reform programs and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity and drug trafficking have resulted in solid economic growth. - US CIA World Factbook

The CKD LTP

When the Peruvian army went looking for tanks in 1935, it contacted the best known sources in the world such as Vickers, Renault, and Fiat. They also contacted lesser known CKD in Czechoslovakia. CKD had the perfect tank for them on the drawing boards. The LTL design for Latvia met the Peruvian specifications exactly. Peru ordered 24 tanks and were so happy with their operation that they were kept right up to 1988 when they were finally retired.
