I received this excellent letter from an Officer in the South African Army

Dear Bill,

Thank you for the kind words about my name, our soldiers and our country.

Included find a photo of a British Marmon-Herrington in the three tone Caunter scheme. Vehicle is armed with a .303 Vickers, Bren LMG and Boys AT rifle, note the serial number.

The second photo is also of a British vehicle in the same scheme.

The third photo is of a South African MH entering a German airfield in the desert, note the overall sand coloor scheme with no markings or serial numbers.

Well I hope this casts a little more light on this interesting subject, I do not say that Mr. Chris Bishop is wrong (in his book), but I have never come across a South African MH in the "Caunter" scheme, perhaps he added the colour profile to his book as a South African manufactured vehicle in a British scheme, if this is the case, then the profile is correct, but not for a SA operated vehicle or paint scheme (in my opinion). The British and allied forces in the desert operated a large number of these vehicle which were supplied by SA..

Well that's all for now,

Regards

William Marshall

This correspondence was slightly edited in order to keep to the subject.
