London Documentary Experience

May 4 – June 15, 2006 (6 weeks)

The documentary has emerged as a powerful and popular vehicle for telling real stories about the world in which we live. London offers a unique opportunity for U.S. students to experience a new perspective on a host of issues facing England, The European Union and the global community. In the six week London Documentary Experience - through course work, hands-on workshops and field trips- students will work in small groups to develop and shoot short documentaries. Students will meet with a variety of Non-Govermental Organizations including human rights, environmental and media activists who are working on issues relevent to England and the larger global community. Documentary topics will be developed out of these meetings and students will work the the NGO's to learn about their subject matter. Students will learn about the media strategies of advocacy groups and examine the discourse of the European public sphere.

A limited number of students will be selected to participate in a five-week experience working with an NGO to help create media products on a social justice issue. Those chosen will be enrolled in a directed individual study, and will receive 3 credit hours. Interested applicants should include a resume with their program application.
