Compassion Fatigue Educator (Friday, October 1, 2004)

Purpose: Prepare you for educating colleagues about vicarious trauma from working with the suffering.
Audience: Anyone working with or wish to work with helpers who are experiencing burnout, vicarious trauma, or compassion fatigue (first responders, journalists, teachers, counselors, nurses and others)
Objectives: (1) Knowledge of the history, definitions, research, theory, and assessment of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. (2) Awareness of the affects of your work. (3) Strategies for avoiding compassion fatigue and recovering from it. (4) Skill in educating and preparing others in the above knowledge, awareness, and skills.
Certification: Compassion Fatigue Educator and eligible to complete the Compassion Fatigue Therapist Certification.

Compassion Fatigue Therapist (Saturday & Sunday, October 2 & 3, 2004)

Purpose: Prepare you for treating colleagues with compassion fatigue and facilitating a transformation to wellness.
Audience: Mental health practitioners who counsel or wish to counsel helpers suffering from work-related PTSD, burnout, vicarious trauma, or compassion fatigue. Such clients may include first responders, journalists, teachers, other counselors, nurses and others)
Objectives: (1) Knowledge of helping professional burnout, countertransference, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue symptoms, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment options. (2) Knowledge and the experience of the YOUTOO! MASTERS © transformative process for wellness. (3) Skill in educating and preparing other therapist in the above knowledge, awareness, and skills.
Prerequisite: Compassion Fatigue Educator.
Certification: Compassion Fatigue Therapist.

Field Traumatologist (Saturday & Sunday, October 2 & 3, 2004)

Purpose: Prepare you to provide crisis intervention during and immediately following a traumatic event.
Audience: Anyone working with people in crisis during or immediately following a critical incident (first responders, journalists, teachers, counselors, nurses and others)
Objectives: (1) Knowledge about the basics of traumatology – history, research, theory, assessment, and treatment—for the purpose of acute care and referral. (2) Knowledge of and skill in applying the Homeland Security-FEMA Incident Command structure. (3) Awareness of the phases, signs, symptoms, and manifestations of traumatic stress reactions and the array of immediate and long-term services and methods for mitigating or preventing long-term problems. (4) Skill in providing peer support, methods for stress management, defusing, debriefing, and other crisis-oriented assistance.
Certification: Field Traumatologist and eligible to complete the Certified Traumatologist Certification.

Training Team

 

Charles R. Figley, Ph.D. is President of the Green Cross Foundation, Editor of Traumatology. and founding member of the Academy of Traumatology. He is a Florida State University Professor in the School of Social Work and Director of the FSU Traumatology Institute. Dr. Figley is founding editor of the Journal of Traumatic Stress and Founding President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. He has published 150 scholarly works including 16 books such as Compassion Fatigue (1995) and Treating Compassion Fatigue. He is a Fulbright Scholar and has lectured and conducted workshops throughout the world for more than 30 years.

Kathy Regan Figley, MS, MT is CEO of the Green Cross Foundation. a Federal Emergency Management Agency Instructor with more than 12 years of experience in disaster management including work with the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Emergency Management. She wrote the first comprehensive training manual for the Academy of Traumatology's Field Traumatologist course leading to a Certified Traumatologist certification. She served as Incident Commander of the Green Cross Projects' deployment to New York City following the 9-11-01 terrorist attacks that provided crisis mental health for a local, large-membership union.

 

 Jim Neugass, RN is a Registered Nurse at the Elizabeth House Hospice in Flat Rock, NC, a Certified Yoga Teacher, and owner of  Woodland Yoga Center. He emphasizes awareness, breathing and alignment. He completed a residential internship program at the Stress Reduction Clinic of the University of Massachusetts. He is committed to assisting his students to experience less stress, transform beliefs and live a more healthy, balanced and peaceful life. Jim is handling local arrangements and will lead the experiential and stress management sessions.
