Purdue University Years
In 1974 Charles Figley receive his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University.
By then he was an assistant professor in the department of child development and
family studies at Purdue University. This Department had an illustrious history
as the birthplace of the journal, Child Development and a launching pad for a
series of important contributions to developmental and family psychology, family
therapy, early childhood education, and other foci. He was assistant professor
there from 1974 until 1978 when he established the Family Research Institute.
He was associate professor from 1978-1983 and full professor from 1983 until he
left for the Florida State University in 1989. Following are brief descriptions

Bob is still in the Army Reserves (LTC) attached to Walter Reed Army Institute

for details of his illustrious career. His wife, Anne, is on leave from
her job as head of the Special Education Department at a Middle School here so
that she can finish her Ed.D. in Special Education from Johns Hopkins. Anne
Michelle is 29 and was married a year ago this past June. Her husband, Luke,
is an engineer for Bechtel and is currently on a 1 year job near Albany, NY designing
a power plant. His daughter, AnneMichelle, is working as a recruiter for
Aspen Systems and moved back in with us temporarily (along with her two Great
Danes and 5 hamsters!) until Luke returns. His son, Micah, is 26 and has
his Master's from U. Maryland in Human Development. He's currently a Research
Assistant/Study Coordinator in the Medical Psychology Department at the Uniformed
Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) here in Bethesda. Looks
like he will be entering the Doctoral program at USUHS in the Fall to study biological
correlates of behaviors like depression and anxiety using fMRI techniques.
Both kids got their Bachelor's degrees at Purdue.

Currently Walter is married to Kimberly Ring and together they have seven children
ranging in age from 6-21. They a 20 acre farm northeast of Manhattan, raising
goats, sheep, chickens, guineas, and other livestock. Dr. Schumm is recently
retired form the US Army Reserves (July 2002). His last assignment was as Commander,
6th Brigade, 95th Division, Topeka, Kansas. He was awarded the Legion
of Merit. His 6th Brigade selected as best company size unit in the
world in U.S. Army Reserve for 2001 and its subordinate battalion, 11th Battalion,
selected as best large unit in the USAR for both 2000 and 2001. Also brigade
had selected the best drill sergeant worldwide in the USAR for 2001. From his

Rick began to work as a counselor with the Veterans Administration “Vet
Center” Program in Oklahoma City in 1984. In addition to counseling
veterans and their families, he began to develop anger management, domestic violence
and sexual offender programs. In 1989 he developed the comprehensive sexual
offender treatment program for medium and low security inmates of the Oklahoma
Department of Corrections. His program was showcased in a segment of the
CBS news magazine “48-Hours” in 1991. Rick has been in private
practice since 1992, providing specialized treatment to sexual offenders.
He conducts forensic assessment of offenders, consults, and provides training
in sexual offender treatment throughout the United States. In 1992, Rick
published his comprehensive sexual offender treatment program. Rick is married
to Gina Jordan, also a counselor who works with high conflict divorce cases.
To maintain their mental health, they travel extensively. At home they dote
on their two grand daughters. Rick recently completed the Pikes Peak marathon
and is currently training for a century (100 mile) bike ride.

1988 Emily M. Wadsworth, Ph.D. Assistant Director (retired)
of the Women in Engineering Programs within the Schools of Engineering
at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907. Dr. Wadsworth was
Co-Principal Investigator for a large grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
that resulted in ten recruitment and retention initiatives. Three of these
initiatives were mentoring programs that were recognized in 1997 with a
Presidential Award for Excellence in Engineering Mentoring from the National
Science Foundation. Dr. Wadsworth has spent these past two years working
on a book titled "Giving Much/Gaining More" published by PU Press in 2002.

Biosketch:Rey C. Martinez is a graduate of University of Hawaii (1987),
Boston University (Clinical Social Work, 1989) and Florida State University
(Ph.D, 1995).
As a doctoral student Rey’s work in the area of nicotine dependence
was jointly funded by the Psychosocial Stress Research Center and
by Lederle Pharmaceutical Company. His dissertation was recognized
at the National Symposium on Doctoral Research at Ohio State University,
followed by an invitation to present his findings at the Nicotine Dependency
Center at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Returning home to the Southwest, Rey Martinez accepted a position as
Assistant Professor at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). While
at UTEP Rey completed several projects funded by the Border Biomedical
Research Center (BBRC). One such article entitled “The Glycemic Effect
of Different Species of Nopalitos (prickly pear cactus) in the Treatment
of Diabetes Mellitus,” evaluates the efficacy of a common, Mexican folk
medicine practice and has been featured nationally on NPR’s Latino USA.
Rey, Sonia and their three children (all three born in Tallahassee) enjoyed
living along the U.S. / Mexico Border for 6 years before moving to New
Mexico.
Presently, Rey Martinez is a tenured Associate Professor in the School
of Social Work at New Mexico Highlands University. Dr. Martinez teaches
Advanced Multicultural Practice, a two semester graduate course for clinical
social workers, and coordinates the Research Sequence for NMHU’s five campuses
(Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Farmington, Roswell). His recent
accomplishments include the development & delivery of Online modules
for teaching statistical methods via distance delivery. Rey is author
of Social Work Guide to the Internet (Allyn & Bacon, 2001).
Rey has continued to pursue his interest in Family Therapy and Substance
Abuse. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Pacific Southwest Addiction
Technology Transfer Center (PSATTC) and was recently appointed to the Scientific
and Policy Advisory Board of Prevention File, a publication of the Silver
Gate Group.
With strong community ties, a commitment to underserved populations,
and a passion for teaching, Rey’s has created numerous opportunities for
New Mexico students wishing to pursue Social Work. He serves on National
Latino Social Work Organization (LSWO) Board of Directors and the Northern
New Mexico Chapter of NASW.

Mike is married to Aimee Barnes and they have one son. Patrick is
currently 16 years old and is a sophomore at Lakewood Ranch High School.
Along with his work at Bayside Center, which is the Department of Psychiatry
for Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Dr. Barnes is an adjunct faculty member
in the Departments of Rehabilitation Counseling and Counselor Education
at the University of South Florida and in the School of Psychology and
Behavioral Science at Argosy University/Sarasota Campus. He is also
on the faculty of the Traumatology Institue at the University of South
Florida. Mike continues to publish and present his research
and treatment approahes, with a current focus on the secondary trauma and
family system disruption in families with a chronically mentally ill member.
Aimee Barnes is currently a Behavior Specialist and Guidance Counselor
at Wilkinson Elementary School in Sarasota and is an adjunct faculty member
in the Criminology Department at the University of South Florida.
