The Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professorship
This is the highest honor awarded to colleagues at the Florida State University since each year only one Lawton Professor is selected by a faculty committee comprised of four previous recipients of this honor and three faculty-at-large (appointed by the FSU President from 6 nominees of the Faculty Senate Steering Committee).

The FSU Distinguished Research Professorship
This award has been designed to recognize outstanding research and/or creative activity of Florida State University faculty. Only 3 awards are given each year. Nominations originate in the nominee's home unit (school or department) and goes to a university committee composed of past winners. That committee recommends to another who, in turn, recommend to the President, with the assistance of the Provost.
