The Troubles of Northern Ireland
Between lectures Monday we were
give a quick tour of the divided sections of Belfast.
These are the sights around the
divided parts of Belfast. A huge walls separate the sides. Murals attempt
to inspire one side and frighten the other.

Among the places we visited was

In
addition to the WAVE Trauma Centre is Survivors of Trauma. They are located
in this building, a former Church of Ireland. They explained that trust
and connection with the community in which their clients live are critical
All day Tuesday I provided training for the staff of the WAVE Trauma Center and select others in the community. The morning session focused on systemic traumatology: The assessment and treatment of traumatized families and children. In the afternoon we focused on helping the helper: The assessment, treatment and prevention of compassion fatigue in working with the survivors of the Troubles and other traumatic events.
These are some of the brave people who fight against evil and hate through their service to the traumatized.

After the training we paused for
some photographs together

That evening I had dinner with Sandra Peake, Rev. Clements, and several others who attend the training from WAVE. We talked about the need for additional training and a program that provided credentials and certifications for those who become qualified to work with the traumatized. Since the trip I have been in contact with WAVE and others about Florida State University and the Green Cross Foundation sponsoring such training that is designed, taught, and supervised by professional in and from Northern Ireland. However, fund raising to make this dream come true will not be easy.
However, the VVMF should feel satisfied
that their Tour started this effort. Time will tell if and when these brave
people will received the the support they need to enable them to end the
Troubles once and for all time and to be well prepared for the healing
to begin.
