Biography

Corinne Jörgensen earned her MLS and PhD from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. She is the author or coauthor of over fifty publications in the area of image indexing and retrieval and has won four national awards for her research and publications. Her most recent major publication is the book Image Retrieval: Theory and Research (2003). As a member of the National Committee on Information Technology Standards, she participated in the development of the ISO/IEC MPEG-7 standard for content description of multimedia. She serves on program committees for conferences such as Human Vision and Electronic Imaging (SPIE), the IEEE Workshop on Content-based Access of Image and Video Libraries (CBAIVL), and the American Society for Information Science SIG for Classification Research. She is currently participating in the ARDA Challenge Workshop on “A Large Scale Concept Ontology for Multimedia Understanding.”

Research Interests

My research addresses issues of the impacts of technology on information seekers and providers, usability of information systems, and users' information seeking behaviors, with a special focus on users of image and multimedia databases.

Teaching Areas

LIS 4301: Electronic Media Production

Introduces the understandings, skills, and techniques needed for the production and utilization of various types of electronic graphic resources, with particular emphasis on visual literacy, the evaluation of graphic resources, design standards, and the visual representation of information.

LIS 5263: Theory of Information Retrieval

Presents Information Retrieval (IR) concepts, methods and systems and their application in a variety of IR contexts. Covers general approaches to IR and how these apply in real-world applications, the limitations of current information retrieval performance measures and other proposed performance measures, the evolving components of an information retrieval system, including metadata, markup languages, and other intellectual technologies, and the current state of the art in IR systems methods and interfaces for different formats and media and the application of these to the needs of diverse groups of information seekers.

LIS 5316: Information Design

Focuses on the conception, design, and production of information products, textual and graphical, print and electronic. Consideration will be given to the representation, presentation, and packaging of information. Design principles will be discussed from historical, theoretical, and practical perspectives.

LIS 5736: Indexing and Abstracting

Presents the role of indexing and abstracting in subject access and information retrieval, surveys the range of indexing and abstracting methods available, relates indexing and abstracting to the concepts of information system design, and provides practical experience in indexing and abstracting of text and other formats.

LIS 6269: Seminar in Information Science

Explores information science in its broadest scope. The student will develop a general understanding of the breadth of the field and its applications, and the basic concepts, theories and vocabulary of information science. Additionally, students will be able to critically evaluate research and trends in information science and will develop greater depth of knowledge within special areas of interest.

LIS 6919: Seminar in the Foundations of Information Studies

Critically examines the intellectual traditions and foundational literature of information and library science (LIS) from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Readings in seminal works provide a rich background and context for analyzing and understanding current problems in LIS and developing research and applications to solve fundamental problems.

Books

Image Retrieval: Theory and Research by Corinne Jörgensen

Image Retrieval: Theory and Practice. Scarecrow Press (Rowman Littlefield): July 2003, 350 pp.

This work provides in-depth background in theory and research in three areas critical to image retrieval: human perception of images and cognitive factors affecting the image search process; systems of organization and access for images; and machine methods for image processing and retrieval. It highlights the unique aspects that each area can contribute to the overall problems of image retrieval as well as the synergies among the different disciplines that can advance the field and integrates threads from among the diverse approaches into new theoretical frameworks for approaching image retrieval. It emphasizes the need for collaborative research among the different disciplines involved in image research and presents a research agenda for the future.
