Because the thrust of the semester’s lectures will cover clothing
of the Western European tradition, the first paper assigned to you will
be of a Non-Western tradition or ethnic folk clothing. In this way,
you will get to explore clothing styles of other cultures.
From the cultures below, choose three that most interests you.
Label your first, second and third
choice. I will try to assign to you one of your choices, but
I do not want more than three students working on any one topic.
In this way, you should have more availability of possible limited research
materials.

This paper should have written information that is computer/typed
double spaced containing 1000
words or 4 pages long. It should also include at least two pages
of Xerox research photos. Plus, it should include a bibliography
of your research sources.
Hand written papers will not be accepted.
This paper is due February 4 th.

COSTUME HISTORY--FILM COSTUME ANALYSIS--SPRING 1999
The second paper of the semester will consist of historic costume analysis from an assigned viewed film. At this point of the semester, your knowledge of the costume history should enable you to observe and analyze period garments chosen for various characters in theatre, opera, film, etc.
From the list of the following films, view one of them and analysis
the costumes related to period costume history. Identify garment
pieces that are worn by specific characters/actors. Address some
of the following questions: How did the costume designer help support
the characters personalities with specific period costume pieces?
What type of period garment cuts were used? What type of fabrics
and trim, wigs and makeup, accessories, etc. were used? How did the
costumes help define class rank, age, wealth, beliefs, etc.?
Were there any costumes that had a task oriented purpose? Did
the costumes help set the season or locale? Did the costumes show a passage
of time in years, that is span a number of periods?
The analysis should be at least 1000 words or 4 computer/typed pages long and double spaced. Please include the name of the costume designer along with the film title. Also, find out if the designer won any awards for the designs. How does the date of when the film was made influenced the period design? This paper is due April 15th.
