Because the thrust of the semester’s lectures will cover clothing of the Western European tradition, the first paper assigned to you will be of a Non-Western tradition or ethnic folk clothing.  In this way, you will get to explore clothing styles of other cultures.

From the cultures below, choose three that most interests you.  Label your first, second and third
choice.  I will try to assign to you one of your choices, but I do not want more than three students working on any one topic.  In this way, you should have more availability of possible limited research materials.

COSTUME HISTORY--FILM COSTUME ANALYSIS--SPRING 1999

The second paper of the semester will consist of historic costume analysis from an assigned viewed film.  At this point of the semester, your knowledge of the costume history should enable you to observe and analyze period garments chosen for various characters in theatre, opera, film, etc.

From the list of the following films, view one of them and analysis the costumes related to period costume history.  Identify garment pieces that are worn by specific characters/actors.  Address some of the following questions:  How did the costume designer help support the characters personalities with specific period costume pieces?  What type of period garment cuts were used?  What type of fabrics and trim, wigs and makeup, accessories, etc. were used?  How did the costumes help define class rank, age, wealth, beliefs, etc.?
Were there any costumes that had a task oriented purpose?  Did the costumes help set the season or locale? Did the costumes show a passage of time in years, that is span a number of periods?

The analysis should be at least 1000 words or 4 computer/typed pages long and double spaced.  Please include the name of the costume designer along with the film title.  Also, find out if the designer won any awards for the designs.  How does the date of when the film was made influenced the period design? This paper is due April 15th.  Choose one of the following films:
