Journeys: The Teaching of Writing in Elementary Classrooms

Writing is about the journey, not the destination. This text takes this idea to heart and presents a map for the trip based on the five elements of the writer’s workshop: mini-lessons, reading, composing, sharing, and continuous assessment. Two-part chapters first address the type of writing being considered – poetry, story, expository, journal, personal, or persuasive – in light of the five workshop elements; then, provide vignettes from three elementary classrooms (Grades 1, 3, and 5) to show the workshop elements being effectively implemented.

Multiple Forms of Literacy: Teaching Literacy and the Arts

This text extends traditional language arts content by offering multiple communicative channels for expressing, representing, and responding to ideas. It equips teachers with ways to maximize children’s creative potential and critical literacy through activities involving “the arts” (visual arts, music, dance, drama, and film, including video, TV, and computer technology). All of the literacy activities presented, which fit into Howard Gardner’s framework of multiple intelligences, recognize children’s different abilities, talents, needs, learning styles, interests, and cultural background.
