| Coaches, The countdown is on to Elementary Science Olympiad 2001 at Jacksonville High School. I hope your preparations are coming along well. First off, please stop by the official ESO 2001 web site for the latest information on this year's competition... http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~ddp0223/ OR http://aso.jsu.edu/esoatjhs/ In the ESO 2001 February News... + PRE-REGISTRATION & PICTURE THIS TIMES + PIZZA ORDERS & FOOD SERVICE + MAPS OF JACKSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL + EVENT ADMISSION TICKETS + PARKING & BASE CAMPS + EVENT CLARIFICATIONS & IMPOUNDING DEVICES + FINAL NOTES PRE-REGISTRATION & PICTURE THIS TIMES The majority of teams have already sent in their tentative team rosters and event registration forms. As of February 9th, I do NOT have rosters or event registrations from the following schools: Haleyville, Oxford, & White Plains. Please email us as soon as possible with your team's information. Visit http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~ddp0223/preregistration.html for further details. Remember, you can add or delete from your roster up to the morning of the Olympiad. Haleyville, Piedmont, & White Plains have yet to sign-up for a time to compete in Picture This. Only a few time slots remain. Please visit the Picture This page for information on how to get your team's time at http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~ddp0223/picturethis.html PIZZA ORDERS & FOOD SERVICE Don't forget to pre-order your pizzas, if possible. The price is $7 for a large cheese pizza and $8 for a large pepperoni pizza. Pizzas will be provided by Domino's. Please order by February 16th for your team. We will deliver them right to your team's table in the cafeteria when they arrive. A limited number of pizzas will be ordered for by-the-slice sales, so please order for your team to satisfy your students' endless hunger. Of course, cokes, hamburgers, and an assortment of candy will still be available. Just email ESOatJHS@hotmail.com with the number needed for your team. MAPS OF JACKSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Need maps of Jacksonville High School to help your students find the rooms they need? They are now online! Visit the ESO News and Notes section for links to the maps: http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~ddp0223/news.html Please be patient as each map image is about 60K and may take a minute or two to download. Click on "Landscape" in the Page Setup for optimal printing. EVENT ADMISSION TICKETS Your school will need an ESO Admission Ticket to enter each event. Simply print out our form at http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~ddp0223/tickets.html and fill it out for each event your school will be participating in. (Note: You may need to set your print margins in Page Setup to 0.5 inches on all sides to fit three tickets per page.) Only one ticket is needed PER event NOT per student. The tickets help our event supervisors account for each team in the event and are used to announce the winners names during the awards ceremony. Therefore, we ask that a teacher complete the tickets (so we can read them) and include any pronunciation guides which may be helful (I tend to mess up at least a dozen names every year!). PARKING & BASE CAMPS When you arrive at JHS for the Olympiad, we ask that you proceed to the back of the school to park and enter through the doors to the Main Gym (Through the four-way stop, then left into the back parking lot). The front parking lot is reserved for staff and handicap parking only. Signs will be posted to assist your drivers in finding the correct parking area. For those new to ESO at JHS, we recommend the use of a "Base Camp" during the Olympiad day. We will be assigning each team a table in our cafeteria to use as a meeting place for your participants when they are not competing in an event. In the past, teams have brought cards and board games to help occupy the down time for the students in addition to their studying for any events that they may be participating later in the day. Three events are also open to spectators: Can Race and Pastamobile in the Main Gym and Crash Landing to be dropped in the Rotunda. RULE CLARIFICATIONS & IMPOUNDING DEVICES Through February 5th, just two event questions have been submitted to the ESO staff. Here is a quick summary: In Aerodynamics, teams will be limited to 15 minutes to construct their two planes. And, in Reflection Relay, teams must use the pocket mirrors provided by JHS during part 1 and the standing mirrors provided by JHS in part 2. For more complete clarifications for these events, please take a look at the ESO Answer Board at http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~ddp0223/answerbd.html. Only one event will require that devices made prior to the Olympiad be impounded. Students, or a team representative, should bring their pastamobiles and their event admission ticket to Room 122 between 9:00 and 9:15. Students should report back to Room 122 at 12:30 to pick up their pastamobiles and bring them to the Main Gym for launch. Can Race vehicles will not be impounded since the event begins at 9:00 in the Main Gym immediately following the morning orientation session. FINAL NOTES Finally, in case of yet another snow event (knock on wood), we will post information on any postponement of the Olympiad on our web site and email coaches with additional details. Good luck in your final preparations. We look forward to seeing you and your team on the 24th. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at anytime at ESOatJHS@hotmail.com Sincerely, David Peters Coordinator, ESO at JHS ESOatJHS@hotmail.com |
