Saronic Harbors Archaeological Research Project

CURRENT AND PLANNED WORK

We have received a permit from the Greek Ministry of Culture, under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, to begin fieldwork in 2007, the first of three years. With generous support from the Institute for Aegean Prehistory, the Loeb Classical Library Foundation, the Florida State University (COFRS and Classics Department), and the University of Pennsylvania, we will conduct our first field season from May 21 - July 2, 2007.

One of our goals is to understand how the harbor at Korfos functioned in the wider Mycenaean world, especially in the inter-state competition between Kolonna on the island of Aigina and Mycenae and other mainland-based centers.

This summer (2007) we plan to:

  • conduct an intensive regional survey of the area immediately surrounding Korfos, complementing the work of the Eastern Korinthia Archaeological Survey, to place the harbor into its regional context
  • thoroughly map the standing architectural remains at the harbor site, utilizing GPS-based high-resolution mapping techniques
  • document through drawing, photography, and measuring all extant architectural remains
  • conduct geological, geomorphological, and geophysical studies of the harbor site and the surroundings on land

  • In future seasons we plan to:
  • selectively excavate portions of the architectural remains
  • explore the underwater remains, both natural and man-made
