Web Page Basics:

I'm working on this and I'm not finished.

A CPM participant and I in fifteen minutes created this web page as an illustration of ease.

Things you will need to create a simple web page:

1. Space on a server for your web page files.

2. An FTP program. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This program is free.  Go and get it here.

3. An HTML generator/editor.

4. An idea of what you want to accomplish with your web page.

4.
The front page of every web page is the index.htm file.  This is what you will name your front page also.  It is named index.htm because all web browsers look for this file first when you go to any directory on the net. From the index.htm file, you will have links to other pages that can be a single page or a page with links to other pages.  For example, from my index page, a person can link to five other pages.  Each of those other pages serves as a kind of category for even other linked pages (under personal pages I have five linked pages).  The links on your index page should be thought of as drawers in a file cabinet. In those drawers you may have lots of files that hold many pages. If you've ever seen a family tree diagram where one set of parents leads to five children who lead to 25 more - you may be able to understand the concept of web pages and their links from this example.

Your index file should have four to six links to pages which represent categories of information you want to give your visitor.

IN NETSCAPE:
Links are as easy as cutting and pasting.  All you do is copy an internet address and paste it into a link dialog box associated with a highlighted item. For example: The Steps of creating a link in a Netscape email message are:(DO THIS FOR PRACTICE NOW)

1 Print these instructions and use the printed copy to work through the following steps.
2 Go to my web page. http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~drv8897/index.htm
3 Click on "Click here to email me"
4 Type Dan Vicker in the body of the message.
5 Highlight Dan Vicker.
6 (you already have netscape open) Without closing anything, switch over to your Netscape browser.
7 Highlight and copy my web page address you see in the Location window of your Netscape browser.
8 Go back to the Email message where you have my name highlighted.
9 With my name highlighted, click on LINK under INSERT on the menu bar.
10 Now paste my web page address in the window labled: Link to page location or local file.
11 Now hit APPLY and or OK and send it to me.

The message will come to me and I will know that you are learning. Vary these instructions a bit by pasting your favorite web page address into a link and send that to me.

I have'nt figured this stuff out for MS Explorer yet.
