Course Selection


The FSU Tianjin Program offers courses in two tracks: Track One is for all students except for those majoring in business; Track Two is for students in business major. Select your courses following the advisement below:
 

I. Track One (all non-business majors):
Each student in this track will register for three courses: 1) "Intensive Chinese," 2) "Chinese Conversation," and 3) "Chinese Culture and Civilization." You should Select the two language courses appropriate to your level of Chinese proficiency:

  • If you have never studied Chinese before, register for:
    1) "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese I" (or "CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I" if you will not take this course again at FSU).
    2) "FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation I."
    (You will be placed in two level-I-A [Elementary I] classes designed for beginners).
     
  • If you are presently in "CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I" or have taken one semester of Chinese, register for:
    1) "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese I."
    2) "FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation I."
    (You will be placed in two level-I-B [Elementary II] classes).
     
  • If you are presently in "CHI 1121 Elementary Chinese II," or have taken two semesters of Chinese, register for:
    1) "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese II" (or "CHI 2220 Intermediate Chinese" if you will not take this course again at FSU).
    2) "FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation II."
    (These are two level-II [Intermediate] classes)
     
  • If you are presently in "CHI 2300 Chinese Grammar," or have taken four semesters of Chinese or more, register for:
    1) "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese III" (or "CHI 4930 Advanced Chinese" if you will not take this course again at FSU).
    2) "FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation III."
    (These are two level-III [Advanced] classes).
     

II. Track Two (business major):
Each student in this track will register for three courses with two options:

  • Option one: two business courses plus "Chinese Culture and Civilization."
  • Option two: one business course, one language course ("Intensive Chinese"), plus "Chinese Culture and Civilization."

CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I
4 This beginning class is for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese. It introduces Chinese pronunciation system and teaches elementary-level vocabulary and grammar. The course is not repeatable. You may register with this course if you 1) have never taken "CHI 1120" or 2) will not take "CHI 1120" later after returning to FSU campus. Otherwise, take "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese I" instead.


FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese I
3 This is the same class as "CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I" taught by the same teacher with same course material. Students who do not want to register with "CHI 1120" can register with this course.


FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation I
3 This is a beginning-level conversation class. It focuses on Chinese oral skills by using language materials organized in terms of functional topics. Students in Track One who take "Intensive Chinese I" should register with this course.


CHI 2220 Intensive Chinese II
4 This class is for students who have had one or two semesters of Chinese on the college level. It teaches vocabulary and sentence patterns at the intermediate-low level. The course is not repeatable. You may register with this course if you 1) have never taken "CHI 2220" or 2) will not take "CHI 2220" later after returning to FSU campus. Otherwise, take "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese II" instead.


FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese II
3
This is the same class as "CHI 2220 Intensive Chinese II" taught by the same teacher with same course material. Students who do not want to register with "CHI 2220" can register with this course.


FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation II
3 This is an intermediate-level conversation class. Students in Track One who take "Intensive Chinese II" should register with this course.


FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese III
3 This is an advanced grammar class and is offered to students who have studied Chinese for two years or more.


FOL 3930 Chinese Conversation III
3 This advanced conversation class is for students in Track One who also take either "Intensive Chinese III" or "Advanced Chinese."
CHI 4930 Advanced Chinese 3
This is the same class as "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese III" taught by the same teacher with same course material. This course is not repeatable. You may register with this course if you 1) have never taken "CHI 4930 Advanced Chinese" or 2) will not take CHI 4930 Advanced Chinese" later on FSU campus. Otherwise, take "FOL 3930 Intensive Chinese III" instead.


CHT 3930 Chinese Culture and Civilization
3 This course is required of all students in this program. It introduces students to major topics in Chinese culture from a historical perspective and helps to enhance students' understanding of the major sites of excursions.


CHI 5505 Chinese Culture and Civilization
3 This course is for graduate students.


MAN 3600 Multinational Business Operations
3 This course covers three areas: Study of the environment, markets, institutions, challenges, strategy, and operations of international and cross-cultural business; Globalization of business and associated challenges posed for the competitiveness of the modern enterprise; Overview of orientations, strategies, and tactics appropriate for international business success.


MAR 3023 Basic Marketing Concepts
3 This course studies the marketing functions-products/services, pricing, promotion and distribution. It also introduces students to marketing management and strategy. Associated topics include marketing research, consumer and organizational buying behavior, market segmentation, and personal selling.
