Q: How can I call my family in the United States from China?
A:

By using two kinds of phone cards, you may reach your family in the United States. Details regarding the purchase and usage of the cards will be provided upon arrival on TFSU campus. See Orientation package for dialing instruction.

Q: How can my parents reach me in China?
A:

Most families purchase phone cards designated to call China for such purpose. These cards are available either online or in selective Chinese grocery stores. One website from where we have frequently purchased our phone cards in the past two years is: www.168talk.com. The cost averages 3.5 cents/per minute to call China. See Orientation package for dialing instruction.

Q: If I bring cash with me, where can I safeguard my money?
A:

Don’t leave cash in the dorm. You may open an account in the Bank of China Branch near TFSU campus with a nominal fee of 13 cents, and make your deposits or withdrawals seven days a week during bank hours (9am-5pm), all free of charge. There is no charge to close the account

Q: If I need money, can my parents send me money and how?
A: Yes. The most convenient way is to wire money via Western Union.

Q: Can I use ATM machine to get cash?
A:

Yes. There is an ATM machine available on TFSU campus. However, we recommend using the ATM service in the Bank of China Branch near TFSU campus, or using the ATM machine in a branch office of Bank of China in the International Building located within walking distance from TFSU campus. A fee does apply for each transaction.

Q: Can I use my credit cards in China?
A: Credit cards can be accepted by major merchants, hotels, and airlines ticket offices. A fee does apply. Most street merchants take cash only.

Q: One of the scheduled activities is to stay with a host family. Do I need to bring any gift?
A: At your pleasure. Since the host family pays for your stay with them on their own, it would be nice if you bring a reasonable gift from, and made in, USA.

Q: Do I need to bring any medicine?
A: You are recommended to bring some over-counter medicine for allergy, cold, cough and upset stomach, etc. Please consult with your family physician prior to the trip to China if you have special medical needs.

Q: What else should I know before departure?
A:

  1. Confirm your international flight three days prior to your departure by contacting your airline representatives.
  2. Bring two copies of your passport: one to turn in for domestic travel in China; the other for your own identification when outing.
Q: Can I stay longer in China to travel on my own after the Program finishes?
A:
  1. Yes. But please note that the FSU Summer Program will not be responsible for your post-program excursions and that all students must check out from TFSU dorms on August 8, 2010. If you plan for a post-program travel, follow the recommendations below:
  2. We recommend that several students travel together. So contact other participants in this Program to find interested travel partners.
  3. Please allow ample time for your post-program excursions: e.g., approximately 6 days for touring Shanghai area (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Nanjing), and 5 days for Sichuan area (Chengdu and Jiuzaigou) or Yunnan area (Kunming and Lijiang).
  4. You don't have to book plane/train tickets from an American travel agent for domestic travel in China. While you are in Tianjin, TFSU's International Office will help you to plan out for your domestic travel in China, including reserving hotel and ordering air/train tickets.
  5. For those whose return flight departs from Beijing Airport: Because domestic flight within China allows a passenger to check in only one piece of luggage, you will want to store most of your luggage at Beijing Capital Airport, which provides storage service at a decent price. On August 9, take the group bus with other students to Beijing Airport. Store your luggage at the airport except for the necessary things you want to use for your domestic travel. After completing your domestic travel, return to Beijing to catch your departure flight back to the US.
  6. For those whose return flight departs from Tianjin Airport, you can store your luggage with TFSU International Students Office. After completing your domestic travel, return to Tianjin to catch your departure flight back to the US.
