Born near central Los Angeles in 1946, I was
raised in North San Gabriel and attended high school in Riverside,
both in California.
I received the Bachelor of Arts in Geography degree from the University of California
at Davis in 1968 and the Master of City Planning
degree from the University of California at Berkeley
in 1970, studying under Professors Andre Rogers and T.J. Kent, Jr.. Following
ten years as a practicing transit planner in Edmonton,
Ottawa, Berkeley,
San Diego, and Sacramento,
I enrolled in the College of Social Science at the University
of California at Irvine in 1981, where I obtained a Ph.D. in
Social Science in 1987 under the supervision of Professors James J. Flink and
Gordon J. Fielding. Following a year long post-doc at the Hagley
Museum and Library as an Andrew W.
Mellon/National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellow, I joined the
faculty at Florida
State University
in August 1988.
