2008 IRWIN OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) division of the Academy of Management requests nominations for the BPS Outstanding Educator Award, to be given at next year’s annual meetings in Anaheim. The BPS division has recognized outstanding educators since 1987. In 1991 the publishing company Richard D. Irwin established a $25,000 endowment for the award, thereafter named the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award.
Previous award winners are:

1987: C. Roland Christensen (Harvard)
1989: James Brian Quinn (Dartmouth)
1991: Charles Summer (U. of Washington)
1993: Michael Porter (Harvard)
1995: William H. Newman (Columbia)
1997: David Jemison (University of Texas)
1999: Arnold Cooper (Purdue)
2001: Michael A. Hitt (Arizona State)
2003: Donald C. Hambrick (Penn State)
2005: Jay Barney (Ohio State)
2007: Kathy Eisenhardt (Stanford)

This award is designed to recognize a person who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to and expertise in educating strategy students. This year’s award is given specifically for contributions to teaching students in undergraduate, MBA, or Executive Education programs. While the person may advise Ph.D. students as well, this call for nominations is emphasizing non-Ph.D. focused contributions.  Nominees should have at least 15 years of service. BPS is seeking a diverse pool of nominees from around the globe.

Some manifestations of outstanding educator contributions might include:

  1. Demonstrated outstanding teaching capabilities over a long period of time.  (For example, the person has demonstrated either breadth or depth in teaching strategy-related topics to Executive Education, MBA, or undergraduate populations; the person has won teaching awards; the person has created strategy-oriented elective courses that are regularly oversubscribed and/or highly rated; the person creates learning environments that promote constructive and interactive class discussions in which students challenge assumptions and share their knowledge and experiences; etc.)
  2. Had an important impact on strategy pedagogy through demonstrated expertise or by developing new and different teaching methods or materials that were subsequently widely adopted by others. (For example, the person has produced high-quality simulations, textbooks, business cases, etc., for strategy courses.)
Nominations will be accepted through November 15, 2007.

Please send your nomination(s) to the following email address (NB: that is the letter “l” and not the number one after the @ sign):

Please include a brief explanation as to why you are nominating the individual.

Many thanks!
The BPS Teaching Committee: Melissa Appleyard, Ilgaz Arikan, Moshe Farjoun, Larry Stimpert
