Animation with HyperStudio

Building an animation sequence with HyperStudio is like building a sequence of animation cards to use as flip cards. The following are some suggestions for building such animations for the Macintosh.

  1. Getting Organized

The most important part of building such a sequence is organization. To help with the organization build a separate folder for each animation sequence. (If working with floppy disks, it may be a good idea to use a separate disk for each animation, then put them together after done. See file management.) To get such a folder, go to finder, then go to the File Menu and select New Folder and place it on your disk. Name to folder a relevant title.

  2. Building Individual Screens

    1. If you want to add pictures, such as Math Manipulatives, go to the File Menu and add Clip Art, select the file and picture you want, frame it, click on OK. Then place it where you want it on the screen and build a HyperStudio Animation, such as:

      • Add a Button (via the Objects Menu) to the first screen that has actions of an automatic timer with time settings of about 1 second, and next card.
      • Go to the Edit Menu and select Copy Card, then go to the Edit Menu and select Paste Card;
      • Use the Move Menu to go to the card just added.
      • Use tools to transform your screen to make changes creating an animation effect (with one change per card)
      • Continue copying the last card, then pasting it, and moving to the last pasted card and make changes.
      • When done move to your first card and select the tool for the execution level (the hand) and check your animation.
      • When you are satisfied with the animation go to the next step to convert to web software.

    2. Before saving the individual cards, go to the Tool Menu move selection away from the Execution Option to a framer option.

    3. Go to your first screen within HyperStudio, go to the File Menu, and export it as a screen, using a meaningful name followed by a suffix such as 01.pcx, for example, scene01.PCX)

    4. Move to the next card and export it in the same folder as above with the same name used above followed by a suffix such as 02.pcx, for example, save as scene02.PCX)

    5. Continue building your screens and exporting them as screens, using the File Menu, and placing them in the same folder, with the same name except for the suffix which should continue to increase in order, for example, save as scene03.PCX, scene04.PCX, ...)

  3. Putting Animations on the Web

You may use the screens created above to extend to animations on the Web. First of all, you need appropriate software such as:

    • If using GifBuilder, the screens need to first be converted to gif files using converter programs (such as Adobe PhotoShop and should then become, for example, scene01.gif, scene02.gif, scene03.gif, scene04.gif, ...

    • Next to use the animation software, start with a new file, then add frames or insert images, one by one, using the converted screens you prepared with HyperStudio, view the file, adjust with options such as setting a loop and frame delays or controls. View and adjust until you are comfortable with it. Save the file and then treat like any graphics you put on the web. See Putting Graphics on Your Home Page
