(for Floppy disks on the Macintosh)


The following are some suggestions for basic disk management:

  • FORMAT YOUR DISK: First, a disk must be formatted. When you first put your disk in the drive, It the disk is not formatted, you will be asked if you want to format it. You should indicate that you want it formatted. When formatting you are often given an option to name your disk. If naming it, use a name that is meaningful to you. It you do not name it, it will assumre the title of "Untitled."

  • REMOVING YOUR DISK FROM THE COMPUTER: To remove your disk from the computer use your mouse to click on your disk and drag it to the trash can. It should then pop out. Do not use the Eject Disk command (it will only lead to problems).

  • SAVING INFORMATION TO A DISK: There are a number of ways to save material on the disk. One method is to use the file manager within a program to save the information. Some programs give you a choice between "save" and "save as." The "save" command will save the program where ever the pointer is directed. To assure that you save where you want to the information to go, select "save as." An option will then appear on the screen, where you can select "Desktop." If you select Desktop, then select the disk (perhaps cleverly title "Untitled," and then define where to save the information, which will require a name that you need to supply. Remember where you saved this information because that is where you will retrieve the information.

  • REMOVING INFORMATION: To remove information that you no longer want, drag the icon for the information to the trash can. Then go to the Special command and Empty Trash. Just be sure that is what you want to do because it will be permantly gone.

  • COPYING INFORMATION FROM ONE DISK TO ANOTHER: There are several ways to copy information from one disk to another. One method is to double click on the disk that contains the information, find the information and drag the icon for the information onto the hard drive for the computer. Then remove your disk from the drive and place another disk in the drive. Next copy the information from the hard drive to the new disk. Also be sure you remove the information from the hard drive after copying the information on the new disk.
