Topics in Elementary Mathematics

Suggestions for Electronic Portfolio

Course Goals:

  1. Illustrate the understanding of the evolution of children's mathematical concepts from actions on objects to transformations of mental images to abstractions;

  2. Exemplify an understanding of the elementary mathematics curriculum and appropriate evolutions of mathematical concepts as well as related concrete materials for developing the concepts throughout the elementary curriculum in space, measurement, geometry, number and arithmetic, logic and reasoning, probability and statistics;

  3. Develop an awareness of instructional materials including technology for bringing about effective learning;

  4. Develop an understanding of factors related to mathematics achievement and how to bring about effective learning experiences, taking these factors into consideration;

  5. Exemplify ways of integrating computers and other technologies into the mathematics curriculum.

  6. Illustrate ways of implementing a problem-oriented learning environment, including effective uses of problem-solving strategies and application within and outside mathematics.

  7. Effectively diagnose students` mathematics knowledge and understandings in order to bring about effective learning experiences;

  8. Examine mathematics as an integrated whole by studying the interrelationships between various branches of mathematics and recognizing its relevance to the real-world;

  9. Examine significant historical and cultural mathematical developments;

  10. Examine various methods of assessment of effective mathematics learning;

  11. Establish credibility with colleagues through competence and integrity, and help peers achieve goals by communicating feelings and ideas to justify or successfully negotiate a position which advances goal attainment.
