Dr. Burnett's interests include mentoring minorities and women in information studies, with an emphasis on information technology. In 2007, she received a grant from the FSU Committee on Faculty Research Support (COFRS) to study Latinas in the U.S. information technology workforce. With Gary Burnett and Paul T. Jaeger, she is preparing a proposal to the NSF to extend this research. As lead principal investigator for Project Athena, she also worked with doctoral students in the field of Library and Information Studies. She has mentored several faculty at the College of Information. Currently, she is faculty mentor for Dr. Hongyan Ma.
P²h.D., a social network-based decision impact system, was designed as part of Project Athena by Dr. Laurie Bonnici (University of Alabama) and Dr. Burnett. This system, is described and access provided from http://www.projectathena.ci.fsu.edu/p2hd.htm. P²h.D. will assist doctoral students when they are making the high-level personal and professional, academic and career decisions that face them as their career unfolds.
The "P -"square" h D System derives it name from the exponential growth in complexity that occurs at the nexus of personal and professional decision-making. P²h.D. is short for Professional/Personal Higher Decision-making Program. The P2hD tool provides a body of knowledge regarding successful and unsuccessful pursuit of doctoral work. It represents the collective wisdom gained through the experiences of the Project Athena Fellows as they considered and pursued doctoral studies in LIS.
The system combines three independent information distribution, information access, and information sharing tools to build the open decision impact system.
