Teaching Interests
My philosophy and practice of teaching has evolved over three decades of experience in cross–disciplinary studies that explore the arts and humanities and interpret meanings and impacts within historical, cultural, and societal contexts. My effectiveness in curriculum development, student advisement, and teaching is directly related to my own commitment to continuously seek, learn, and integrate new knowledge and methodologies. This provides relevant educational experiences and intellectual challenges that inspire graduate students, undergraduates, and colleagues to pursue their passions, develop critical thinking skills, realize their potential, and make professional and societal contributions. more...
Research Interests
My scholarly activities represent an ongoing interest in projects that cut across traditional disciplinary and methodological models. For example, among the grants and fellowships I have received, three are awarded especially for interdisciplinary studies--the Dedalus Foundation Senior Research Grant in 2001 for studies in modernism, a visiting scholar position at the the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ in 1990-91 and the J. Paul Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship in Art History and the Humanities, held at the University of Michigan in 1986-87. In the latter positions, I was responsible for participating in a wide range of academic and research programs, including the social sciences, modern languages and critical theory. These institutional affiliations also enhanced my affiliation with the International Association of Word & Image Studies (IAWIS), the Advisory Board on which I have served since 1990. In this capacity I have organized international conferences, designed and chaired daylong programs of sessions, and edited a publication of conference proceedings. more...
