I am Associate Professor and Head of the Ethnomusicology/World Music program at Florida State University, where I direct both the Sekaa Gong Hanuman Agung Balinese Gamelan and the Music-Play Project, a medical ethnomusicology program for children on the autism spectrum and their families. I am the author of two books: World Music: Traditions and Transformations (McGraw-Hill, 2007), which has been adopted as the textbook for world music, multicultural music, and music appreciation courses at more than one hundred universities throughout North America and internationally; and Music of Death and New Creation: Experiences in the World of Balinese Gamelan Beleganjur (University of Chicago Press, 1999), which was reviewed in The Times (London) as one of the two "most significant publications on Balinese music in almost half a century" (17 May 2002). (For additional information on my professional activities and publications, go to www.worldmusic-bakan.com.) The main purpose of this blog is to provide links and other helpful resources related to World Music: Traditions and Transformations. Instructors may request comp review copies (book, CD set) at www.worldmusic-bakan.com.
