Ray BlockAssistant Professor Tel: 850.644.7318 Background:Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 2006. Major research and teaching interests include American politics, political participation, public opinion, and minority group politics. Research Agenda:I have a long-term fascination with the study of mass-level political involvement. Scholars often distinguish behavioral involvement from psychological involvement, calling the latter “political engagement” and the former “political participation.” My ongoing research looks at racial differences in expressions of political interest (an important but understudied form of psychological engagement, which refers to a person’s desire to “follow” or “pay attention to” politics). More generally, I want to understand how political engagement relates to political activism, and I am working on several projects that examine the mutually-reinforcing properties of interest in politics and political participation.
