Major Advisor and Committee
Upon admission to the program, you will be assigned a temporary major advisor to assist you in selecting courses and planning your first year of study. Either the student or faculty member may request a change in advisor, subject to approval by the program coordinator. At the end of your first semester of enrollment, you will select a major professor and the members of your Master's Committee.
Educational Psychology Faculty may serve as members of your committee, as may other members of the Educational Psychology and Learning Systems department (Instructional Systems and Psychological Services in Education).
Your Master's Degree Project
We encourage students to design and conduct a study addressing some aspect of human learning or cognition within their own setting. Of course, you may also design research in the same substantive area as your major professor. Your master's project serves as the assessment in lieu of a comprehensive Master's exam, since the focus is on the synthesis and application of information in the context of an actual problem. You will also receive guidance about how to develop your study into a paper that is presented at conferences and published in a professional journal.
Please discuss the MS Comprehensive possibility
with your advisor because this means a terminal Master's degree
in the program.
