INTENT

The masters degree program in Learning and Cognition, part of Educational Psychology at FSU, is designed for students and professionals who are involved with learning, cognition, development, and group processes in a variety of contexts, such as the classroom at any level (including adults), the military, government, private enterprise, the courts, and other organizational settings. Our program is sponsored and administered by the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems (College of Education) at Florida State University. We draw on the internationally recognized resources of the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems, the College of Education, the Learning Systems Institute, and Florida State University, designated a Research I University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

For example, you may be a teacher, a supervisor concerned with adult learning processes as a means of developing employees who are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century workplace, or you may be a professional who develops training seminars.  An important focus of our program is on developing the reflective practitioner, someone who critically assesses their own practices by acquiring the knowledge of how to study learning and behavior systematically. You will find that our program is highly individualized, and provides you  with the opportunity to select the schedule of courses that meet your needs.  With a carefully planned program, you may also earn a Certificate in Measurement and Statistics and/or in Human Resource Development.

Our resources include an in-building computer center. The Center for Educational Research & Policy Studies is housed in the Stone Building, which added a brand new wing in Fall 2008 and has undergone terrific renovations, and the large and diverse Learning Systems Institute is a short walk to the south. The new Florida State University Medical School is directly across the street as is the Department of Psychology. Our  Educational Psychology program is also the center of applied methodological and statistical training on the FSU campus.

In 2008, the Educational Psychology Graduate Program at Florida State University was rated 24th among all such programs in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.

However, we consider the collegial relations among our faculty and graduate students to be our strongest resource. Students and faculty actively collaborate on developing courses and teaching them, consulting with educational systems at all levels, consulting with government, the military, and private industry, and conducting research, presenting the results, and writing for publication.

We invite you to join us! We're an exciting place to be!

Our students come from many different backgrounds and thrive in the diversity in our program.

SOME RECENT MASTER'S THESIS TOPICS

Although our department name changed from Educational Research to Educational Psychology and Learning Systems through our 2003 merger with Psychological Services in Education, the Learning and Cognition major requirements are the same. The merger expands our faculty and options available to our students. For example, many students can now take courses in counselling or school psychology because these programs are now part of the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems.
