Major AdvisorUpon admission to the doctoral program, you will be assigned a temporary major advisor who will assist you in selecting courses and planning your first year of study. At the end of the first full year, all students are reviewed by program faculty. At that time, you will choose a permanent advisor who directs the remainder of your program of study and supervises your dissertation research.
Supervisory Committee and Program of StudyAfter the first year Qualifying Review, you and your major professor will select a four-person supervisory committee, which must consist of your major advisor, at least one additional member from the Educational Psychology program, and at least one member from outside the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems. The supervisory committee will formally approve your program of study, supervise your preliminary exam, and supervise your dissertation.
Educational Research Faculty in the major areas of Instructional Systems, Measurement and Statistics, Program Evaluation, Sport Psychology, or Psychological Services in Education may serve as members of your supervisory committee.

Preliminary ExamMost students complete an original research study for their Preliminary Exam and defend it before their supervisory committee. Following completion of their preliminary or doctoral exam, most students present their study at a professional conference and submit it for publication. The Preliminary Exam usually takes place by the end of your second year of doctoral studies.

Doctoral DissertationYour dissertation is a work of original scholarship that contributes to our knowledge on the topic that you choose. Most dissertations take the form of an original research study although it is possible for the student to create new theory in Learning and Cognition. Some students analyze data from existing databases, such as those compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics, the National Science Foundation, the Higher Education Research Institute or other agencies or foundations.
