Washington State Population
Pyramid, 1990
Source: US Census Bureau STF 1

This Population Pyramid
presents Washington State's population by age and gender. The
left hand set of bars is the number of Males by age cohort,
beginning at age 0-4 on the bottom and topping out at the age
cohort of 85 and older. Females are on the right hand side of the
chart. Note that there are more elderly females than males at the
top of the pyramid, reflecting the higher mortality rate of
males.
It is also interesting to
note that the Baby Boom is clearly identifiable in this chart.
The "bulge" (or "pig in the python") in the
age cohorts 25-29 through 40-44 represents all the post-WWII
babies that have altered public policy, government services, and
local planning ever since. The trough, or much smaller cohort
immediately behind the Boomers, has also had significant effects
on local planning and programming efforts. Lastly, the "Baby
Boomlet", the children of the baby boomers, is also apparent
in the youngest age cohorts.
