IPI Cases

We have completed the first round of coding for 14 countries. Unfortunately, human coding is prone to error, and we found that we needed to do a second round of coding, which we call editing the data (for a discussion, please see Davis, Leeds and Moore 1998, available for download from the papers page of this site). While our funding covered the coding of the data, we did not secure funding for the editing, and that has been done on an on-and-off basis since 1996. Thus, to date we have two types of data: coded and edited.

The cases were coded for the years 1979 through 1992, using Reuters North American service for 1979-81 and Reuters World Service for 1982-92.

* The cases marked with an asterisk were coded for 1975-85 using The New York Times Index and Africa Research Bulletin. Zaire was also coded for 1986-92 using the same sources.

To download the edited data, click on the country in which you are interested. You will find a link to a zipped file which contains the relevant data in both a Microsoft Excel (v 3.0) and a comma delimited fomat. You will also want to get the 'generic' and 'case specific' actor/target lists before you use the data.

Although the coded data have not been edited, we make them avialable for download. We do so for two reasons. First, the corrections that we generally make in the editing stage concern the assignment of actors and events. Thus, people with an interest in studying the interaction of dissidents and states (as we are) will not want to use unedited data. However, people interested in a count of protests, for example (where the actor is not important), might profitably use the data. Similarly, someone interested in determining whether a given actor acted at least once in a specific period of time might also profitably use the data. Put differently, the utility of the coded, but not edited, data depends on one's goals. Though the data contain more coding error than desirable for our purposes, they may be useful for some people's purposes.

Second, if someone is interested in working with the data (in effect, editing it themselves or using it to some other end), we are happy to share it.
