Course Objective
This course was created to provide the student with a broad overview of ethnic conflict and international relations; third party interventions in civil wars; and state repression. We will focus on both theories that help us explain and understand these topics, and the policy implications of the theories. In addition, students will sharpen their analytic skills as well as their oral and written communications skills.
Evaluation
Students' grades will be assigned on the basis of their performance on two criteria: class participation and a paper.
Participation
This course is a seminar. Students are required to arrive to class having completed the reading and prepared to discuss it. Students will be called on and asked to respond to questions about the readings. Students are also required to contribute to discussion when they are not called upon. Participation will count for 50% of the course grade.
Paper
Students will also be required to complete a type-written paper. The paper will count for 50% of the course grade
Students pursuing an M.A. in the International Affairs program must select a policy question on which to write. The paper will recommend and justify a specific policy to be pursued. This policy paper may be written to a chief executive of a country, a military, an IGO, or an NGO. Students are required to consult with the Professor and get approval for their papers.
Students pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. in political science are required to produce a research design that describes a project that they could carry out to do empirical inquiry. A useful discussion of what these types of papers look like can be found at . Students are required to consult with the Professor and get approval for their papers.
The paper must conform with the style described in the Style Manual for Political Science (APSA, 1993) which is for sale at the bookstore. Papers that do not conform to this style will be returned to the student and will not be accepted until they conform with the style. In addition, the papers must be typewritten (dot matrix is fine) and meet the following specifications:
* 8.5" x 11" white paper with 1" margins
* Pages must be numbered
* Text must be double spaced
* Your name, the date, and the course number must be on a title page
* The paper must be bound with 1 staple in the upper left hand corner (NO REPORT COVERS).
Papers that do not meet these specifications will not be accepted.
With respect to style, the papers must conform to the style outlined in the American Political Association Style Guide. For suggestions on writing papers, please see my tips on writing papers page on my WWW site (http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~whmoore/writpap.html).
Naturally, grammar, punctuation and spelling "count" in these papers--please run the spell check if you use a word processor. PLEASE make a copy of your paper (or print an extra one) and hang on to it. That way if it gets lost, you have a backup.
