This is a special edition highlighting the remote sensing and GIS research conducted by investigators within EPA EaGle Research Program. The remote sensing component of this program was in part supported through a partnership with NASA. EaGLe grantee, Dr. Xiaojun Yang, served as guest editor for this special issue. It is a collection of 11 articles selected from nearly 40 submissions in response to an open call-for-papers. This issue focuses on the applications of remote sensing and GIS technologies for the characterization, analysis, and modeling of the urban environment. The selected papers are grouped into five main categories, each of them representing a particular aspect of technological advancement in relation to urban analysis.
